"Hector Avalos: How Archaeology Killed Biblical History" recorded 10/23/2007

Part 2 of 2

Hector Avalos is professor of religious studies at Iowa State University and the author or editor of six books on Biblical studies and religion, including his recently published work, The End of Biblical Studies. Join us for a fascinating presentation detailing how the more we discover about the ancient world, the less reliable we find the Bible.

From the dust jacket of The End of Biblical Studies: Hector Avalos calls for an end to biblical studies as we know them. He outlines two main arguments for this surprising conclusion.

First, academic biblical scholarship has clearly succeeded in showing that the ancient civilization that produced the Bible held beliefs about the origin, nature, and purpose of the world and humanity that are fundamentally opposed to the views of modern society. The Bible is thus largely irrelevant to the needs and concerns of contemporary human beings.

Second, Avalos criticizes his colleagues for applying a variety of flawed and specious techniques aimed at maintaining the illusion that the Bible is still relevant in today's world. In effect, he accuses his profession of being more concerned about its self-preservation than about giving an honest account of its own findings to the general public and faith communities.

"There Are No Ghosts in Your Brain: Materialist Explanations for the Mind and Religious Belief"

P.Z. Myers, biologist at the University of Minnesota Morris, host of the website Pharyngula( http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/ ), and indefatigable defender of evolution, shares his expertise and insights on brain function, explaining how research into the brain reveals the evolutionary causes of religious belief.

In P.Z. Myers's own words:

"We've made great strides in the past century towards understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive brain function, and I will briefly present an overview of some of the major conclusions of that work. In short, though, what we have are sophisticated molecular regulators and sensors and effectors and modulators that generate patterned impulses in pathways throughout the brain, and the mind is ultimately reducible to highly organized chemistry—there's no room for ghosts, souls, or spirits, and no need for them, either.

"Recently, researchers have made progress in identifying the neural substrates of higher level patterns of thought. This work is much more tentative, and we have to be aware of the limitations of our interpretations, which is a consequence of the complexity of the data. I will discuss one narrow aspect of this research, the neural basis of religious belief, and explanations for its evolution. Religious belief is an emergent consequence of much broader genetically determined properties of the brain; I will make the argument that there is no "god gene", no specific hard-coding of religion into human brains, and that religion itself is a kind of conceptual parasite that takes advantage of other desirable and even "virtuous" intrinsic qualities of the brain."

P.Z. Myers is a biologist at the University of Minnesota, Morris. He has a BS degree from the University of Washington, where he studied the developing nervous system of the fruit fly and the histology of the mouse brain. His Ph.D. is from the Institute of Neuroscience at the University of Oregon, and his thesis was on the development of motor pathways in the spinal cord of the zebrafish. He has since done research on the assembly of the central nervous system of grasshoppers at the University of Utah, and the effect of birth defect causing agents on the developing brain at Temple University in Philadelphia. He is currently examining how genes and environment interact to shape behavior in fish. (Dr. Myers adds: "Fish, by the way, all seem to be atheists, and insects even more so.")

"Sen. Marty at MN Atheists Meeting" recorded 1/21/2007

"Separation of State and Church and the 2007 Legislature"

Minnesota State Senator John Marty has been a staunch advocate of separation of state and church in the Minnesota Legislature. His latest defense of the First Amendment was an eloquent, passionate opposition to a proposed anti-same-sex state marriage amendment in the Senate Judiciary Committee last year.

Senator Marty will speak to us on "Separation of State and Church and the 2007 Legislature." Will bills be introduced on same-sex marriage, contraception and abortion, stem cell research, or vouchers?

Senator Marty has been a member of the Senate since Jan 1987 and represents seven northeast Metro suburbs, including the area where the Roseville Library is located. After his talk, we will present him with a First Amendment Award from Minnesota Atheists.

"Day of Reason 2006" recorded 5/4/2006

This episode discusses the Day of Reason and recreates some of the speeches.

On Thursday, May 4th, Minnesota Atheists celebrated the National Day of Reason in the Rotunda at the Minnesota State Capitol. From noon-1:30 p.m. we presented speakers who quoted George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Adams, Mark Twain and others in support of separation of state and church. Also featured was a review of recent scientific studies demonstrating the ineffectiveness of prayer. Representative Phyllis Kahn stopped by to listen, as did Minnesota's Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer. Other legislators heard our raucous cheers for state/church separation as they took breaks from their duties. There were a few friendly exchanges with attendees of the National Day of Prayer, which was being held outside while we spoke indoors. (One woman who did not engage us in conversation silently read her bible while circling the rotunda.) A page from the legislature (a high school student at Bethany Academy) came up to the mike to ask why the event is named the "Day of Reason." Moderator Steve Petersen answered that the name promotes the use of reason as a way to solve problems. He went on to say that in choosing to counter the Day of Prayer with the Day of Reason, we are reminding citizens and their legislators that prayer should not be sanctioned by government, although we do not seek to interfere with anyone's right of free speech, including prayer.
